We may know that artist Kathryn Haug's paintings are recognized for the tangible material quality of her picture plane. However, within the accumulation of paint blobs and the flow of excess drips lie memories from family photos and stories. Her works are deeply personal, yet they depict scenes and objects that could be part of anyone's narrative. In this way, she connects with the viewer, sharing her experiences while simultaneously exploring the viewer's own life experiences.

Hoag's practice is a collaboration between materials, color, and intuition. She has spent a lot of time working with paint, investigating its texture and how it sits and behaves on the canvas. She paints in the Alla Prima style and excels in her practice by transforming the challenges of this painting style into her signature approach. Using thickly loaded brushes, her first mark is often the final one, embracing imperfections as beauty in her artworks.

It was wonderful to speak with Kathryn and gain a true understanding of her practice, techniques, and choice of subject matter.
